<p>The choice by the advertising agency to use a split screen is inspired and a great way to halve the time it takes to transfer information. This commercial is oozing with style!</p>
<p>The only difficulty may be the fact that it will take multiple viewings to appreciate the many individual wonders of this commercial.</p>
<p>This is a brilliant example of a commercial with a clear vision and the resources to execute brilliant. Now get me a martini, I&#8217;m feeling lucky!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h1>Nike vs Adidas, McDonalds vs Hungry Jacks, Coke vs Pepsi.</h1>
<p>These brands have all soared to the great capitalist heights yet remain locked in a battle with their main competitor. Nike, McDonalds and Coke are leading the chase yet their competitors are snapping at their heels and making gains.</p>
<p>As Avis famously said, &#8220;We&#8217;re number 2, so we try harder.&#8221;</p>
<p>Adidas bought the rights to the last Fifa world cup, so to counter this, Nike launched the <em>Write the Future </em>campaign that featured heavily on television.</p>

<p>The ad was brilliant, awe inspiring. Although the commercial never lingers to long on the product shot, I was amazed to see that despite the world cup being an adidas event, so many of the stars could recognisably be seen wearing Nike&#8217;s latest football boot.</p>
<p>At the time, I was curious to see what Adidas would do in response. There had been controversy surrounding their Jabulani ball as the players seemed unfamiliar with it.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s when I found this.</p>

<p>Production, celebrities, nostalgia. It was a big ad. Yet because I, like most others had seen the Nike commercial first it had that &#8220;me too&#8221; feel that so often plagues companies in such hot competition. Nike had done a big ad so Adidas did one too. What&#8217;s interesting is that the Adidas video was seemingly released first and over time, the Adidas video has now received five times as many Youtube hits as the Nike video.</p>
<p>That being said, I never saw the Adidas video on TV which is where Nike no doubt were seen by millions more.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re battling it out with a competitor it&#8217;s hard to break away from &#8220;me too&#8221; advertising that in some way acknowledges your competitor. But be warned people are pretty quick to recognise desperation and the &#8220;try hard&#8221; factor.</p>
<p>In order to succeed you have to find a unique segment in your market. Adidas are increasingly embracing a cool and slightly underground appeal and the less they acknowledge Nike the more popular they become.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #000000; font-weight: bold;">Who could forget this memorable yet politically incorrect television commercial for Moccona&#8217;s <em>Mocha Kenya range</em>.</span></p>

<p>So this commercial is clearly from a different time. Look no further than the <em>questionable</em> use of stereotypes that I&#8217;m pretty sure would have caused a stir even in 1997. Yet, 15 years on this television ad remains memorable.</p>
<p>What this TVC manages to do is a tell an interesting story in a short amount of time. The writing is tight, the idea is strong and the execution is brilliant (in that it achieves exactly what the advertising agency is going for). This commercial could have just as easily appeared in a comedy skit program, like this one:</p>

<p>However television commercials do not have the freedom or lack of agenda that sketch comedy has. Advertising is a mixture of art, marketing and social science. Using advertising to gain attention is a reasonable result but the true measure of good advertising is how successfully it influences consumer behaviour in the way that exceeds client expectations and how well it grows the brand.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re making a TV ad, think about your objectives, your message, your brand and your audience. Making an ad everyone remembers is great but a good advertising campaign will build your brand value, create a long lasting brand platform and give you high return on investment.</p>
<p>A lot of us remember this ad sure, but has Moccona got a cent out of me..?</p>
